The Liver and Skin Connection

The Liver and Skin Connection

The Liver and Skin Connection

As a Nutritionist and Holistic Skin Expert, I often get asked about what products I use to achieve healthy glowing skin, and my number one piece of advice is always “it starts from within.” Our skin is our largest organ and is a reflection of what is going on internally.

Did you know that the liver is our main organ to eliminate toxins out of our body? Therefore, if we are on toxin overload, our liver doesn’t function properly, and can become sluggish and that is when you may start to notice changes in your skin.

You may notice symptoms such as:

  • Redness
  • Eczema
  • Rashes
  • Dullness
  • Acne
  • Flaky skin

Other common issues such as hormonal imbalances, stress, lack of sleep, and poor diet can also have a negative impact on your skin health, however one of the main causes is a distressed liver.

The good news is there are ways to naturally nourish and support your liver!

It’s important to focus on whole foods, drink plenty of water and avoid anything that may distress your liver such as processed foods, sugar, alcohol, and excess caffeine. Now there are also many supplements on the market that can help support/detox our liver, but it’s important to choose one that is safe and gentle.

Milk Thistle is an herb that contains properties to help nourish, strengthen and gently detox our liver, and is one of the safest most natural remedies that has been used for centuries when it comes to liver support.

I’m all about choosing supplements that are made from whole foods, and my go-to Milk Thistle supplement is from Living Alchemy. What makes their formulation unique is they use a fermentation process with the “finest organic milk thistle using a month-long fermentation containing 35 select species of micro-organisms from kefir and kombucha cultures.” This helps with bio-availability and provides optimal absorption and support for your liver!

An added bonus is that this formula also contains organic dandelion root and turmeric. This makes this a revitalizing blend as dandelion root is known to help tone, protect and cleanse the liver, and the anti-inflammatory benefits of turmeric provides your body with overall wellness.

Spring is in full swing, which is also a perfect time to nourish our bodies. Starting within is not only a perfect way to add a little bounce to your step but the benefits will radiate through your skin, and your liver will thank you!
